African Cichlids?

My sister just gave me 3 cichlids. I don't know what kind they are and I don't know how to take care of them. Do they need a higher ph then most fish? what should the temperature be at? and what can they eat other then cichlid flakes? Any help would be greatful.

African Cich's can tolerate a high variation in Ph. 72 degrees should be fine. Feed them flakes, live brine shrimp, pieces of raw spinach leaves, small worms. Also, keep them in a LARGE tank. Africans are highly territorial and aggressive when they get bigger.
They can also eat live fish.
i dont know what kind of cichlids you have, but they also like to eat small goldfish, rosy reds and minnows. they also like to eat crickets.
Find out what ph your sister kept them at and try to keep it the same. Typically, they should have a higher ph 7.8-8.0, but the fish now a days have adjusted to different ph's for the most part. I wouldn't recommend changing the ph on your own, you need to stay on top of it, or it'll crash real quick and shock/kill your fish. Temp range I'd say 76-78 degrees. Food wise I'd stick with spirulina flakes. Africans are prone to bloat, and a high protein diet isn't recommended for them.

This site here has pictures/info to help you try to id what kind of fish they are.

pH should be 7.0 temp 76 to 82 you can feed them live flakes pellets or frozen food
theres so many types of african cichlids from lakes and rivers both, and they all need different care.some are predatory, but others cant have any meat in their diet becouse its way too much protien for them to digest and they get a disease known as bloat, which is pretty much fish constapation.my advise is join http://forums.fishindex.com/index.php?. and there we can help you better, and you can post pics.the fish section in PetQnA.com is a joke.
There are 2 more popular types of cichlids South American and the African. I do know they are fresh water ish but need special salts added to there water and its best to over populate there tank because they are agressive. You can not mix the too types together because of the ph differances. If I were you try looking up more information online under cichlids. food wise they can eat flakes or they even carry pellet food. good luck they are very beautiful fish. Try this link (http://www.cichlids.com/info/beginner).
african cichlids come from 3 main lakes in african, lake tangyikan, lake victoria, like mawlai,

each lake has its own characteristics and diffferent water ph, so it would be good to know what the fish look like.

But general, african cichlids like ph around 8-9 and temp around 77* F
fish profiles.com website will answer all questions about basics, and has pictures. African cichlids - south american cichlids the care and requirements are very differant so check both sections to determine the species of fish that you have.
