Are you supposed to leave aquarium lights on all the time?

We have goldfish and we need to know if the lights should stay on all night. Should they stay on 24/7?
Answers:
no, you should try to turn the lights on and off with the sunrise and sunset so they have a somewhat normal existence.
no,the fish will get disoriented, plus the lights will burn out
turn them off at night so the fish can party
depends on the temp of your house and how much outside light it gets. i leave mine on all the time in lieu of a heater, but this does not work for me if aquarium is in a sunny place-too much algae growth
no, fish need to sleep too, and they have no eyelids try not to turn the aquarium light on first in the morning, turn on another light in the room first so that they have a chance to adjust. Now for the truth from me. I have gone both ways, leaving the light on always or turning it off at night, it did not seem to bother the fish either way, but I do normally turn lights of to save energy and to let the fish rest easier.
Its not that big of a deal either way. The light is there pretty much so that you can see your fish. Your fish do not need it to see especially goldfish.

Try this out if you get a chance and you'll see what I am talking about. Try feeding them in little or no light. You will see that they will eat the same way that they did with the light on.
no it should only b on bout 4/6 hours
In a word, no. More important if you have plants, but all animals need dark (rest) time - all part of the natural cycle
No. The sun doesn't shine 24/7, does it? The lights are there to imitate sunlight and should be on for around 12 hours a day. Leaving the lights on will stress the fish, create a good old algae bloom and create unnecessary heat. Put the light on when you get up in the morning and off about 12 hours later.
turn them off when you go to bed, the fish dont need them
no u should not keep the lights onn 24 hrs ever. the direct light affects their eyes and they can turn blind. they basically need daylight. so keep them in a place where there is enough sunlight and only keep the lights on in the evenings and then switch them off again before sleeping. take care of them.
no 10 to 12 hours a day is plenty keep out of direct sunlight
kaajal got it right certain types of lighting can cause your fish to go blind over time i have timers on mine set to my schedule so i can view them when i'm awake and home they do need light but not all the time, besides it promotes algae
